Renaissance Home Connect

  • Parents must use an invitation code to logon (available upon request).
  • What is Renaissance Home Connect?
  • Class Activation Code:  GNRWN
  • Orders are submitted on the first Friday (school-day) of each month.
  • BoxTops4Education are available on General Mills products.
  • Clip "BoxTops" and turn them in at Vejar before they expire.
  • Each "BoxTop" is worth 10¢ for Vejar.
  • Classrooms that raise turn in the most "BoxTops" win a reward.

  • Content standards are designed to encourage the highest achievement of every student, by defining the knowledge, concepts, and skills that students should acquire at each grade level.



Renaissance Place

The STAR Reading Assessment
  • About once a month, students take a STAR reading assessment through the Renaissance Place website at school.
  • The STAR Test produces a score knon as the students' ZPD (Zone of Proximal Development; a.k.a. “Reading Range”).
    • An example of your child’s score might be 1.5 – 2.5 (interpreted as 1st grade reading level at month 5 through 2nd grade reading level at month 5).
Choosing Books
  • With their ZPD ("Reading Range") in mind, students are taught to choose books to read at their reading level.
    • Classrooms visit the school library once a week.  Students may check-out 2 books from the school library each week and are encouraged to not take these books home so they can return to the library later that same week and check out other books.
    • Students may check out 1 book at a time to take home from our classroom library as desired.
    • Students should alternate between fiction and non-fiction literature.
    • Most of the books at school are marked for easy reference, but they may also choose books from home, Scholastic book orders, the public library, etc..  Books that do not have a marked reading level may be looked up at
Accelerated Reading (AR) Quizzes
  • The teacher assigns AR point goals each trimester based on students' reading levels.
    • This goal is modified for certain students based on individual needs/abilities.
  • Students take AR quizzes to earn points.
    • In second grade, 2-3 AR quizzes each week are usually sufficient for students to earn enough AR points to reach their goal on time.
  • AR Quizzes must be taken at school.
    • If they do not pass the quiz they may re-read the book and re-take the quiz.
  • Students are encouraged to read at home 20 minutes/day and may bring those books to school to take quizzes if they are within the child's ZPD.
AR Home Connect
  • Parents can view their child's AR progress through AR Home Connect.  (An "Invitation for Renaissance Home Connect" is required to login.)

How to use AR BookFinder

  • Students may take quizzes on books read outside of school on books within their ZPD ("Zone of Proximal Development," or informally known as their "Reading Range").
  • Students' ZPDs are posted in the classroom.
  • Please refer to AR Bookfinder ( to determine the reading level of a book and its AR point value.
  • Quizzes must be taken at school after the student finishes reading the book.


Students have a reward system for using their break time (recess) for bathroom-going instead of class time:

  • Each student will receive 4 raffle tickets every Monday.
  • They may use a ticket to go to the restroom whenever necessary during class time (up to 4 times throughout the week).
  • On Friday, unused bathroom tickets will be collected and the class will be rewarded with an equal number of marbles in our marble jar.
  • When the marble jar is full, students will enjoy a classroom "marble jar" celebration.

  • Spelling:
    • Worksheet Packet (1 or 2 pages/day)
    • Due Friday (Spelling Test on Fridays)

We can’t wait to learn all about the one and only special you when you present your decorated Read All About Me poster.

Each week 1 student will take home a Read All About Me poster to decorate and share with the class.  It is due the following Friday.  Every student will be chosen throughout the school year and then be honored as a Valuable Vejar Vaquero (VVV) at the next Spirit Day Assembly (first Friday of every month) in our school amphitheater.

Please decorate it with photographs, drawings, stickers, glitter, ribbon, and lots and lots of color.  Color everything!  Use your creativity and have fun with this family project to work on at home.

You will present your poster to the class when it is due.  Practice reading your poster to your family, your friends, or even your pets and stuffed animals.  Your friends will also ask you questions about your poster so be ready to talk.  J

Afterwards, your poster will be on display in the classroom for the rest of the school year.
2nd Grade Annotation Marks
Students practice annotating reading selections in their language arts workbooks and are also expected to implement the same skills in their Scholastic News Magazines for homework.

More Classroom Supplies Damaged
This occurs by students rubbing rulers on the edge of a table.
We have been having a problem with vandalism in our classroom.  Please see the photo below.  There are a few students who are being destructive with the erasers I provide.  I probably provide about 15 new erasers to students every day.  Erasers go missing, erasers are torn apart, erasers are rubbed down to make “putty,” or they just go missing.  While I understand that not all students are responsible for this misuse of our classroom supplies, perhaps you can help reinforce responsibility in the classroom.  We have had similar issues with pencils in the classroom.  I try to provide all the supplies that are necessary in the classroom because we were having a theft problem with students bringing their own property to school.  The silver lining is that this is a terrific opportunity for students to be reminded that having nice things is an earned luxury that only comes when responsibility with supplies and respect for other people’s property is demonstrated.

ST Math Goals

Room 17 visits the Vejar computer labs at least 90 minutes each week with additional access to ST Math in the classroom throughout the week.  I will be making one new ST Math module accessible at home each week to allow students extra time to keep up (but not allowing them to go too far ahead).

Damaged Pencils
Please talk to your child about taking care of classroom supplies.  Many of you have donated mechanical pencils (which have worked out terrifically), but some students have had to go back to conventional pencils due to already rendering the mechanical pencil given to them useless.  Now, I am finding pencils that the erasers have been pulled, ripped, torn, and/or chewed out.  As many of these classroom supplies are shared, it is imperative that students help take care of the supplies to keep them in working order and to prevent the spread of germs.

Please, do not allow children to bring toys of any kind to school. This includes Pokémon cards and playground balls also.
