FIRST DAY PACKETS In an effort to use less paper, WVUSD created a set of online forms of all first day packet items for you to complete. You will read through the documents and fill in electronic signatures. This eliminates the need for a lot of paperwork for parents. Please plan on about 15 minutes of time to read and fill in all the information. This will need to be completed for each child at Vejar. It will take less than 5 minutes to complete for each additional child. Go to http://www.vejarelementary.org/, look under News and Announcements on the home page, click on the link First Day Packet to complete the online forms. Alternately, you may type or paste this link into your browser to access the forms https://goo.gl/forms/pt74fk2INHV2Q3fz2. The only additional paperwork you will need to complete is the emergency card. You will receive this during the first week of school.
If you do not have online access to complete the above items, you may obtain paper copies from the school office. Additionally, you may request to use a computer in the school office to complete your form between 9:00 am and 2:00 pm on school days.
PARENT COMMUNICATION Vejar is committed to parent-school partnerships. In order to facilitate communication, please visit our school website. In addition, you will receive community phone calls from Vejar updating your family on current information. This year we will use the Remind App for one way text message reminders from school. Sign up here for this free service https://www.remind.com/join/veja?utm_medium=ios
CLASS ASSIGNMENTS Your child’s class assignment will be posted on the office doors August 10 after 4:00 pm. Classroom assignments were made after careful consideration from the teachers and principal. Classroom assignments will be posted the entire weekend, so avoid the crowds and come later! Class assignments will also be posted at http://www.vejarelementary.org/ . You will need to know your child’s student ID number to access the class assignment online. Please note that classroom assignments are subject to change within the first two weeks of school in order to best meet the needs of the students.
TK/KINDERGARTEN ASSESSMENT/EARLY WEEKS Our TK and kindergarten teachers are committed to maximizing school time and plan to individually assess students at the beginning of the school year. This assessment time necessitates an early release at 11:35 am. The dates are August 13-24. We appreciate your support, as assessing students after class is beneficial to improve the instructional program for all students.
SAFETY Please review the safest route to and from school with your child. Children must use crosswalks and cross streets only at the corners. The speed bump is NOT a crosswalk! Children must also obey the crossing guard. For the safety and protection of all children, do not drop your child off in the morning before 8:00 am. There is no supervision on campus before 8:00 a.m. Students must be dropped off and picked up at their scheduled times or child care must be arranged. Students habitually dropped off early and/or picked up late will be directed to Child Care at parents’ expense.
PARKING LOT CLOSURES FOR SAFETY Our traffic patterns, designed by city, district, and school officials, will remain the same. Our parking lots are closed to through traffic before and after school. Our parking lot is closed for afternoon pick-up. For the safety and protection of all students, please follow the designated traffic patterns. When picking your child up after school, you may park and walk to the school for pick up. Another option is to pull into the designated PICK UP zone along Vejar Drive. Bus drivers and after school care will be the only vehicles allowed into bus lane. Please drive slowly and carefully at all times. Please do NOT park in the loading zone on Vejar Dr. Please pull all the way forward before loading/unloading. Do not make U-turns in the middle of the street or crosswalks. Do not cross or encourage your child to cross anywhere except the crosswalk. Do not let your child get out in the middle of the street. Students rely on our parent community to be safe and cautious drivers.
STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT/VEJAR VALUES Vejar is proud to continue to be a PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Support) School. We teach students behavior expectations in all areas of the school based on our values of Be Safe, Be Responsible, Be Respectful. In 2012 we were honored as a California Distinguished School because of our exemplary PBIS program.
ELECTRONIC READING DEVICES With approval from your child’s teacher, your child is welcome to bring electronic reading devices (i.e., Nook or Kindle) to school. Each device should be labeled with your child’s name. Please be aware that the school does not assume any responsibility for lost or stolen items.

Menus will be posted on the Vejar website during the first week of school, and can also be found on the district website. Lunch will be sold on the first day of school. Lunch will be served every day, including minimum days. Students’ accounts may be prepaid, and all students are required to learn their pin numbers at the beginning of the school year. Any monies left from the previous year have been rolled over to this year. Access all nutrition information at www.walnutnutrition.org.
PLEASE BE ON TIME Don’t forget all students need to be in their classroom lines on the playground by 8:15 am in order to be marked on time. Students that are not in line when the bell rings in the morning will be marked tardy. Thank you for ensuring your children are on time each day.
WVUSD WELLNESS POLICY Vejar honors this policy which promotes nutritional education and physical activities. If a student forgets to bring a lunch to school, parents should bring the student’s lunch to the office by 9:30 am with student’s name, teacher’s name and classroom number written on it. We will not interrupt instruction to deliver lunches. If you are delivering a lunch, instruct your child to pick it up from the office. Students that do not have a lunch may obtain a lunch from the cafeteria charged to their account.
PARENT CONFERENCE WEEK Our parent conferences will be held on October 5th, 10th, 11th and 12th. These will be minimum days for all students. As in previous years, if you have any concerns throughout the school year about your child’s progress, please contact your child’s teacher.
HOW DO I GET INVOLVED? There are several ways to get involved at Vejar and we would enjoy getting to know you. Our parents are vital to Vejar’s success!
- Community Club Parent Group: The Vejar Community Club is a group of parents dedicated to promoting positive relationships between the home and school. They provide our students with extra activities, programs, and materials. All parents are considered members and are welcome to attend the monthly meetings. You may contact Melissa Hanson or Stephanie Esparza at firstname.lastname@example.org. The Community Club parent group typically meets in the evenings once per month, and all community members are invited to attend.
- School Site Council: The SSC meets at least four times a year and consists of staff members and parents. This team serves as a decision making body regarding our educational program. All parents are welcome to attend the meetings.
- Volunteers: You may also volunteer in the classroom, library, or for the Community Club Parent Group. We need volunteers to help with many activities throughout the year. Contact your child’s teacher or the Community Club. All volunteers must be cleared prior to volunteering and check in and out at the office each day they are on campus.
- Arrival and Dismissal Volunteers: We are on the lookout for parent volunteers to help with morning and after school traffic. Parent volunteers are requested to help as often as you can – whether it is once a month or every day.
VOLUNTEERS The Walnut Valley Unified School District continues its policy designed to ensure our schools are safe. This policy requires one extra step for our parent volunteers. Please be prepared to submit a completed application available online and a copy of a California Driver’s License or California ID. This information will be kept on file for all volunteers and must be revised annually to ensure the safety of all children. The application can be accessed at their webpage. Please print it, fill it in, and submit it to the school office. https://goo.gl/k0eior
PARENT AND COMMUNITY DONATIONS
Our parent community generously provides services for our school. Please consider donating to support our school! During this school year, Community Club will continue the Round Up donation Drive. Some examples of how the funding is utilized are listed below.
- Classroom supplies/Instructional materials – This is above and beyond what parents voluntarily donate to the classroom each year.
- Binder Reminders for each 4th and 5th grader and communication folders for each TK-3rd grade student.
- Field trips – One trip per grade level including the transportation cost - $12,000 this year.
- Education enrichment – Exposure to the arts through Meet the Masters and Imagination Machine; in addition, technology such as educational software.
- Technology Chromebooks and STEAM support!
We look forward to getting to know you and your child, and hope you have a wonderful educational experience at Vejar. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call our office at 909-594-1434.
